Schools should teach how to avoid and prevent violence?
For the record, I am not aware of any school in Canada taking such an approach. Naturally, it would be a controversial subject. Is it possible and useful to put on the curriculum? Say, as a or two special conferences a year, to be delivered by experts as the cops, judges, social workers, school counselors, etc., and aims to inform children about warning signs of potential violence and how they can protect themselves (two females and males). Ideas, anyone?
My school (Canada) proposed a short self-defense outside the regular school curriculum covering such topics briefly. Only 20 of 900 children had actually participated though. (I went because my parents said they would be more comfortable for me to be at any time roaming the streets if I went.) I saw him fitting in Grade 9 health class or gym class or something. If it was up to me to design such a program, I think I include a section that attempts to teach children to recognize verbal and emotional abuse (which often precedes physical violence in relationships long term anyway.)
